In mijn jonge jaren “many moons ago” ben ik begonnen als spotter. Nog niet in het bezit van een auto was ik aangewezen op mijn vader, die af en toe goedwillend naar Soesterberg reed om mij het spotten en fotograferen mogelijk te maken. Snel rijbewijs halen en autootje kopen!
Hiervandaan dateren dan ook mijn eerste herinneringen aan de vliegbasis Eindhoven. In mijn eendje (het autootje) naar onder meer Eindhoven. Was mooi daar omdat toen het vliegverkeer langs de openbare weg taxiede en enthousiast kon ik de Falcon Mystere 20 van de Philips vliegdienst vastleggen bij mijn eerste bezoek. Later op het platform nog de activiteiten, met name de F-27’s, mogen fotograferen. Tot zover mijn vroege herinneringen aan de vliegbasis Eindhoven. Ik was dus best nieuwsgierig naar dit boek over de vliegbasis, maar ook het civiele gedeelte ervan.
Deze uitgave van de uitgever Geromy, in de serie over Nederlandse vliegbases neemt je mee naar de periode van 1952 tot en met 1994 en dit vraagt om een tweede deel. Dat er dan ook ongetwijfeld zal komen. In 11 hoofdstukken, waarvan er 6 een duidelijke relatie hebben met de vliegbasis en de luchthaven.

Een enorme dikke pil van 432 pagina’s, dus als je eraan begint hoef je je voorlopig zeker niet te vervelen. Het is een fotoboek waarin de foto’s letterlijk voorbij denderen qua formaat en hoeveelheid. Korte stukjes tekst plakken het geheel aan elkaar, net genoeg om het boek compleet en interessant te maken. Eigenlijk een heel mooi spottersboek. Ik refereerde al aan mijn spotterstijd!
Als vliegveld is Eindhoven of Welschap zoals het civiele veld al vanaf 1932 operationeel en genoemd naar het buurtschap Welschap waarin het toen gelegen was, tussen Best en Veldhoven. Overigens het militaire gedeelte heet nog steeds Welschap, maar in de volksmond Vliegbasis Eindhoven. Uiteraard krijgt civiele gedeelte van de vliegbasis ruime aandacht waarbij ook nog even stilgestaan wordt bij de Fliegerhorst Eindhoven in de Tweede Wereld oorlog, maar daarna is het een en al vliegbasis.
Tussen de genoemde jaren 1952 en 1994 wordt uitvoerig aandacht besteed aan de eenheden/squadrons die vanaf Eindhoven opereerden. Van de basisvlucht, 314, 315, 316 tot 334 squadron. De T-Birds, Streaks, F-5’s en F-16’s met als laatste de toestellen van 334 squadron, beperkt omdat 1994 als eindjaar genomen is. Verder “de afstoot”. Waar zijn de toestellen (Thunderstreaks en Freedom Fighters naar toe gegaan), demo teams en solo demonstrators van de squadrons.
In Detacheringen en oefeningen nemen de schrijvers u mee naar zowel bezoekers en oefeningen op Eindhoven alsook de Eindhoven squadrons zelf. Heel veel leuk en interessant buitenlands fotomateriaal in dit gedeelte. Zelf heb een van de Reforger (Return Forces To Germany) mogen meemaken op Eindhoven waarbij de in Rotterdam aan land gebrachte en in Rotterdam elkaar gezette helikopters van de Amerikanen naar Eindhoven vlogen om te worden geserviced en de Herculessen af en aanvlogen om eveneens in Rotterdam uitgeladen legervoertuigen verder naar het oefenterrein in Duitsland te vliegen.
Ook de squadron exchanges, Open dagen, Squadron Jubilea worden niet vergeten en wat te denken van het deel “visitors”. Alles netjes per jaar gerangschikt.
Het fotomateriaal is zeer gevarieerd ook qua lay-out. Hele mooie paginagrote kleurenfoto’s worden afgewisseld met halve pagina’s tot en met 8x12. Af en toe een echt spotterskiekje als ik ze zo oneerbiedig mag noemen. Neem me niet kwalijk dat ik ze niet geteld heb, maar het zijn er echt een heleboel. De lijst van meegewerkte luchtvaart enthousiasten bestaat uit twee pagina’s en bevat veel bekenden namen.
Conclusie
Het tweede boek uit, wat ik hoop een serie wordt over alle militaire vliegvelden in Nederland.
Een spottersboek boordevol met schitterende foto’s, vele nog niet eerder op deze wijze gepubliceerd. Door de opzet wordt u niet alleen getrakteerd op foto materiaal met betrekking tot de squadrons op de basis maar vind u ook een schat aan buitenlands materiaal.
De tekst is beperkt en oppervlakkig maar genoeg om het tot een informatief geheel te maken.
Ik heb het nu meerdere malen gelezen en doorgebladerd en elke keer zie ik weer wat nieuws.
Modelbouwers kunnen ook leuke en interessante foto’s vinden in het boek.
Helaas heb ik Volkel net gemist, dat deel is inmiddels uitverkocht, maar ik kan niet wachten op Deelen (het volgende deel op het moment van schrijven, februari 2024), maar hoop dat ook Leeuwarden, Soesterberg, Gilze Rijen, Woensdrecht, Ypenburg, de MLD vliegkampen en uiteraard de ontbrekende jaren aan de beurt komen. Samen zouden ze een prachtig stuk militaire luchtvaartgeschiedenis weergeven. Ik heb vliegbasis Eindhoven met veel plezier en interesse gelezen. Ik denk dat ik het nog veel zal door bladeren.

This is now the third book about the Mitchell by Wim Nijenhuis in the Mitchell
Masterpieces series, who we really can define a specialist on the North
American B-25 Mitchell in all its ways and appearances. The first two parts
dealt with the military Mitchell, now Nijenhuis is aiming on the Mitchells that
are still actively flying on commission, maintained by volunteers and/or in
museums or whatever and wherever, often always civilian.
Due to the end of the Second World War, an enormous amount of equipment became
available which was often dumped on "scrapyards", of course also the
Mitchells and fortunately the Mitchell also found its way to use in other areas
and aircraft were kept as so-called "warbirds" and pampered with a
lot of love and made airworthy again,
such as the Dutch Duke of Brabant (Air Force), nowadays the Klu (Royal
Netherlands Air Force) Historic Flight at Gilze Rijen Air Base.
This third edition has no chapters, but is divided into the users and owners of
the B-25 Mitchell around the world. The American part takes up about two-thirds
of the book, the rest covers Canada, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium,
France, Switzerland, Spain, Australia, the Soviet Union, Argentina, Bolivia,
Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay and Venezuela and not to forget the
American film industry where they not only functioned as "stars" as
in Catch 22, but also as a complete flying camera platform with transparent
noses. The B-25s were often used
commercially for transporting personnel or goods, for training, firefighting, spraying
crops or even as luxury business jets. I've even come across one mentioned in
the book that ended up in another war with the Rebel Biafran Air Force in
Africa.
As indicated, the book has 256 pages and no less than 750 photos from large to
small and in black and white and colour. Appendixes take care of all civil
registrations with type and USAAF serial numbers, a list of owners and museums
and a list of the aircraft that are still flighing. Of the 120 remaining
Mitchells (publication of the book January 2024), 40 are still airworthy.
Conclusion
Together with the two previous books by Wim Nijenhuis, this third volume makes
a wonderful reference work about the North American B-25 Mitchell, complete
with the "post-war" users and post-war is of course a relative term.
It is again a very well-kept book with a lot of good photographic material. You
will not find any technical drawings and/or profile drawings in it. Please note
that the book is entirely in English. If you are in possession of parts 1 and
2, then part 3 should certainly be on your bookshelf, but it is also
interesting as a stand-alone title.
